The city of Columbus’s commitment to LGBTQ+ rights dates back to at least the 1970s, when a 1974 ordinance extended housing and public accommodations protections to include sexual orientation. Seven years later, two hundred people marched in the city’s first pride parade, and the queer community in Columbus continued to grow from there, expanding its activism efforts around the city and county.
During the 1980s, the decade saw the foundation of numerous local activist organizations, including the Stonewall Union and the Columbus Association of Black and White Men Together, as well as increased activity from student groups at Ohio State University, among them the OSU Gay Alliance (formerly the Gay Activists Alliance) and the OSU Gay and Lesbian Alliance.
